What do you think is the most important purpose of a resume? Is it just a document that captures the record of what you have accomplished in your profession so far? No! The purpose of a resume is to get you through to that interview room of a potential employer with the hope that they already have an understanding about you and are ready to meet you with a positive mindset. If it were so simple why do we still come across a lot of job seekers who complain that their resume seldom or never gets shortlisted? There are many employers desperately seeking out various candidates with the same skill sets but are also complaining that they hardly receive any “relevant” resumes. This result in a struggle to get the right talent on board which usually goes on for many months.
What do they mean by “relevant” resumes? Well, while some might be looking for a more in-depth explanation of how you have been utilizing your skill-set in your previous or current jobs, others could be curious to understand how you acquired those skills, where have you been able to apply them and your success stories. And lastly, there could be some employers who are genuinely interested in knowing you as a ‘person’ just by looking at your resume even before having decided to actually meet you. And trust me; it’s not easy at all.
Having spent more than 15 years in the industry, met so many job seekers & aspirants, hired thousands of candidates for multiple roles, across geographies, skill sets and cultures; I can totally understand and acknowledge how difficult it is for the applicants to ensure their resume stands out amidst thousands of others. At the same time, I can relate to the plight of the employers who spend several days of their productive time surfing through those piles of resumes just to identify the few applicants who “appear to be the best fit (though may not be necessarily in reality) on resume and invite them for an interview discussion.
So the big question is – how do we clear this clutter for the employers as well as help all these job seekers to get those brilliant & most creative looking resumes that usually are very rare to see and yet ensure the “relevance quotient” of those resumes to get the job done – of getting you through to that interview discussion, sitting right in front of your dream employer?
Well, it’s made simple. Your Resume just got expired. RIP.
